ABOUT THE EVENT

The Institute for the Development of Human Arts (IDHA) is pleased to share that several of our members have writing featured in the upcoming anthology We’ve Been Too Patient: Voices from Radical Mental Health!

To celebrate the book’s release, and explore its importance for our community of changemakers and the broader field, we are holding a book reading on July 10th from 7-9 pm at Bluestockings. Come listen to stories and research challenging the biomedical model and share in conversation with the wider IDHA community. We are also pleased to be joined by one of the book’s editors, L.D. Green. The reading will be followed by a brief reception with snacks and beverages.

JULY 9TH EVENT

On July 9th from 7-9 pm, there will be an official book launch at McNally Jackson Books in Williamsburg Brooklyn, featuring a panel discussion and book signing with both of the book’s editors, L.D. Green and Kelechi Ubozoh. Find more information and RSVP here. We hope you’ll join us for both: the official book launch on Tuesday, and IDHA community + food on Wednesday.

ABOUT THE BOOK

As Robert Whitaker suggests in his foreword, the current psychiatric system believes in the “magic bullets” of pharmacological drugs and dehumanizing diagnoses. In We’ve Been Too Patient, voices from the front lines of radical mental health reframe the stories we’ve been sold about mental ‘illness.’

In 25 unflinching essays and poems written by and for people with lived experience of the mental health system in America, We’ve Been Too Patient reclaims the narrative to ensure that there is “nothing about us without us.” There are no magic bullets, no single story. From the Mad Pride movement to the Consumer Movement to trauma-informed care, mental health care stands to be radically revised by this multitude of voices.
